The old shape Red Mazda RX 7 is Bazil Myberg in his ridiculously fast supercharged Chev LT1 power RX7. You just have to see this car go !!

Masons Mill Autocross 19 July 2009
Hi Guys,
I guess it also had to happen ! Now James has decided he also wants to become a car racing driver ! On the week end of the 19 July James did his first autocross .The event was held at Masons Mill short circuit , where most of the top South African motorcycle Circuit racers cut their teeth. He drove his very trick Mazda RX7, which we have been building up over the past two years as a father and son project. It started off as a relitively cheap project car which was going to be his daily driver. Problem is, he has the same problem I have. Do it right or dont do it at all.......so ,out with the battered cheque book. Starting off with a car that cost me R60,000-00, I'm too scared to get the calculator out, but it has been worth the expense and effort. The car pushes out over 400 hp at the rear wheels and goes like a scalded cat. When the turbo starts boosting the engine EXPLODES into life. You have to treat it with great respect. Fortunately this model RX7 is one of the best handling cars around, which is more important than out and out horsepower.
In qualifying , on a cold track and reletively cold tyres, when it burst into the power band, it spat James out into a wild slide and then into the tyre wall. He finished the session with a bit of a knee trembler. He was livid as it dented the rear fender and left a long black tyre smear down the side of the car. James loves his car to bits and that is the last thing he needed. Me too..........now I have to pay to have the ruddy thing fixed.
Anyway, he made up for the misfortune and finished up second in the six cylinder turbo class and fourth overall for the day. In the lucky ticket draw he also won half a sheep. At least he went home with two trophies and enough meat to keep us in sheep sarmies for the next six months.
A few months ago I bought an old Chev Can-Am race car which had no engine in it. I've also over the years been accumulating parts to build a Chev LS1 383 Cu Inch stroker engine. I now have everything I need and am busy building an engine for this litte car. James can rather race that and keep his nice shiny Mazda to go to university in.
I dont know how he'll handle 600 hp in a car that will weigh in at under 1000kg. There's a saying that you cannot have too much power...and too much money.. and too much sex. I think anything in excess is just right !!
Regards,Mike Egan |
