1.About Thundersport !! Mike Egan, the founder of Thundersport, has always been a speed freak and an adrenalin junkie. He was awarded his Natal colours for winning the Natal Off road car championships in 1986. Mike has also competed in four Roof Of Africa rallies on a bike. His best result was in 1977 when he finished third in his class and seventh overall, on a Suzuki PE250.He is also the founder of Bikeparts, a Motorcycle shop in Duban. He got the hell in with the customers' "ever since you.." syndrome, and sold the shop. Having always had fast V8 powered cars or vans, he,in 1988, decided Natal needed a shop where anyone could buy American V8 engines.
Using the proceeds from the sale of Bikeparts, Mike bought a container of ratty old V8 engines. One container load led to another and the rest is history. In the early '80's Mike became one of the founder members of the KZN drag racing club which started drag racing in Natal.Camps drift was the venue in Pietermaritzburg with the occasional meeting at the Margate airport. Another facet of motor racing Mike competed in, was autocross at Masons Mill.Autocross grew into a spectacular spectator sport. The V8 powered cars thrilled the crowds with their long and wild powerslides.Nothing like destroying a set of tyres in a day !! Thundersport has been based in their own premises in Pinetown since 1992.They are the longest established American Car Parts shop in South Africa and carry the widest selection of parts and accessories. In November 2008 Thundersport will turn 20 years old. Mike married his wife Stefnie in 1980 (he thinks) and they produced a son James.
The saying goes...."the apple does not fall far from the tree..". Their 16 Year old son James, has inherited his mother's calmness and his father's penchant for speed. That combination has made him one of the fastest circuit riders in South Africa.Riding the Thundersport Honda RS125 and Yamaha TZR50, James won five Championships in 2006, his second year of racing. He was awarded his KZN regional colours for the 125GP and 50cc classes as well as the Northern Regions colours in the 125GP class.
In 2007 Mike bought James two Yamaha R6 bikes to compete in the Wesbank Super Series. He had to compete against the best riders in South Africa. He got his first podium in his third meeting and won overall for the day at his fifth meeting. For 2008 Yamaha distributors have given James a fully sponsored ride in their National Team.
